Realizing we are desperately in need is half the battle won
Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. If you had known me, you would have known my Father also. From now on you do know him and have seen him.” Philip said to him, “Lord, show us the Father, and it is enough for us.” – John 14:6-8
If Jesus calls Himself “the way”, there must be a destination He’s leading us to. This destination is more than a physical location in the afterlife. Yes, Jesus’ sacrifice on the Cross is more than just a ticket to Heaven. This destination is a Person – our Heavenly Father. The greatest need in Philip’s heart cried out for Jesus to show them the Father. Philip recognised that if he were to encounter the Father, the desperate need of his heart would be fully satisfied.
Every human being was designed to have an intimate, trusting and dependent relationship with our Creator God. Sadly, sin has separated us from God from birth, leaving us with an aching longing for the Father’s love.
Hope deferred makes the heart sick, but a desire fulfilled is a tree of life. – Proverbs 13:12
As we grow older, that deep longing becomes harder to shrug off. Drugs, alcohol, self-mutilation, promiscuous lifestyle, gambling and other vices are some ways we use to numb the yearnings of love in our hearts. People have given their life to sports, to their families, to building a career or traveling the world just to somehow find their hearts still longing and hoping for more.
These are not enough. For that they desire is not earthly but divine. It is not temporal but eternal. It is unseen, untouchable, but definitely knowable. Only the love from Father God is enough.
